PSSI leadership row ‘political wrangling between party elites’

The row over the national soccer association's leadership has turned into political wrangling between a number of elites in political parties vying for power in the organization, House of Representatives deputy speaker Pramono Anung says.
The politician from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) said Tuesday that the PSSI debacle was no longer about the fight to improve soccer management in the country.
“Wrangling between political powers is obvious in the PSSI debacle,” he said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
Pramono, however, did not say which political parties were involved.
He also said he regretted that the government had intervened in PSSI affairs by denouncing its leadership and cutting off its access to government funding. He said it should have been the National Sports Committee (KONI) to intervene and not the government.
Pramono said both statutes of PSSI and the world soccer regulator FIFA stipulate that the government plays a supervisory role.
Youth and Sports Affairs Minister Andi Mallarangeng announced Monday that the government no longer acknowledged the PSSI leadership under its chairman Nurdin Halid and secretary-general Nugraha Besoes. The statement came on the heels of a disorderly PSSI congress in Pekanbaru, Riau, on Saturday.
Andi said the government would also halt all government funding to the PSSI until a new leadership was formed for the 2011-2015 period.
